Thyroid cancer develops in the thyroid gland&mdash;a butterfly-shaped organ located in the lower front of the neck, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.saintjohnscancer.org\/endocrine\/meet-our-team\/people\/melanie-goldfarb\/\">Dr. Melanie Goldfarb<\/a>, Director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.saintjohnscancer.org\/endocrine\/\">Center for Endocrine Tumors and Disorders<\/a> at Saint John&rsquo;s Health Center, and Professor of Surgery at Saint John&rsquo;s Cancer Institute in Santa Monica, California. In older patients and some younger patients, it is found incidentally when imaging is performed for unrelated reasons.<\/p>\n<h4>Risks Factors of Thyroid Cancer include:<\/h4>\n<ul style=\"line-height:18px!important\">\n<li>Being female<\/li>\n<li>Age<\/li>\n<li>Hereditary conditions<\/li>\n<li>Family history<\/li>\n<li>Radiation exposure<\/li>\n<li>Being overweight or obese<\/li>\n<li>Lack of iodine in the diet<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Most people with thyroid cancer have no known risk factors, and thyroid cancer can recur once it&rsquo;s been treated.<\/em><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center!important;padding-bottom: 30px;padding-top: 10px\">\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 34px!important;line-height: 36px;letter-spacing: -1.5px;text-align: center\">All thyroid nodules should be evaluated with a thyroid ultrasound, and a biopsy should be taken in order to get a diagnosis. Surgery is the main form of treatment for thyroid cancer.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;padding-right: 5%;margin-top: -30px;margin-bottom: 25px\">&ndash; <i>Melanie Goldfarb, MD<\/i><\/p>\n<h3>Treatment of Thyroid Cancer:<\/h3>\n<ul style=\"line-height:18px!important\">\n<li>Active surveillance (regular ultrasound examinations)<\/li>\n<li>Surgery (See <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.saintjohnscancer.org\/endocrine\/conditions\/thyroid-cancer\/\">Thyroid Cancer Symptoms, Diagnosis, and Treatment<\/a><\/em><\/li>\n<li>Radiation therapy, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.saintjohnscancer.org\/endocrine\/diagnosis-and-treatment\/radioactive-iodine\/\">radioactive iodine<\/a> (adjuvant therapy)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.saintjohnscancer.org\/endocrine\/diagnosis-and-treatment\/hormonal-therapy\/\">Thyroid hormone therapy<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Targeted Therapy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Most thyroid cancers respond well to treatment, but a small percentage can be very aggressive.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Thyroid Radiofrequency Ablation for Benign Thyroid Nodules<\/h3>\n<p>Thyroid nodules can be <em>benign<\/em> (non-cancerous), and cause difficulty eating, breathing, swallowing, and become unsightly, resulting in a visible bulge in the neck. These nodules can be treated non-invasively with Radiofrequency Ablation, more commonly referred to as RFA treatment. RFA is a newer outpatient procedure for thyroid nodules that has a high success rate.
