Early detection through screening can significantly reduce the risk of dying from breast cancer. The primary screening method is a mammogram, an x-ray of the breast that can identify cancer before it is large enough to cause symptoms. Women at average risk for breast cancer are generally advised to start annual mammograms between ages 40 and 44, continue yearly screenings from ages 45 to 54, and then switch to biennial screenings from age 55 onwards. For those at higher risk, additional methods like breast MRI may be recommended.

The Margie Petersen Breast Center at Providence Saint John’s Health Center offers a comprehensive and compassionate approach to breast care. It utilizes sound waves to create detailed images of the breast tissue, aiding in the detection and characterization of breast abnormalities. We may recommend an ultrasound to help determine whether a breast abnormality is likely to be a fluid-filled cyst or a solid mass, which may be either benign or cancerous.

Learn more about Breast Ultrasound.

Breast Biopsy

Biopsy is a procedure performed to obtain a tissue sample from the breast for examination under a microscope. It can detect small tumors that may not be palpable during a physical exam. Regular mammograms are recommended for women starting at age 40, or earlier for those with a family history of breast cancer or other risk factors. A mammogram is considered the standard of care to screen for breast cancer.

Learn more about Mammograms.

Other Types of Diagnostic Testing

Other tests and procedures may be used depending on your situation. PET Scans (Positron Emission Tomography), for example, are not used to screen for breast cancer due to the limited ability to detect small tumors, they are useful in staging breast cancer. This includes evaluation of the lymph nodes and cancer spread to other parts of the body. Similarly, CT scans (Computerized Tomography) are not routinely used to evaluate the breasts but may be used to verify if a tumor has spread into the chest wall. This knowledge helps to determine the type of recommended surgery. Thermography or Thermal Imaging is another type of test that measures the temperature of a patient’s skin, revealing metabolic blood flow, which can be elevated where tumor cells are rapidly dividing. Learn more.

Annual Check ups

Annual checkups are essential for maintaining breast health and detecting any changes early. The Margie Petersen Breast Center’s focus on breast health underscores the importance of early detection and prevention in combating breast cancer, a leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women. The breast center, led by Dr. Janie Grumley, Director, Comprehensive Breast Program, is known for being able to evaluate any breast condition in one day. A clinical breast exam may include more than one type of imaging method. Breast examination is a fundamental component of breast evaluation. Performed by a healthcare provider, a breast examination is different than a self-exam. A physical exam involves palpating the breasts and underarms to detect any abnormalities such as lumps, thickening, or changes in texture. It is a simple yet effective method for identifying potential issues that may require further investigation. During the exam, your provider will physically check both of your breasts. Combining regular mammograms with clinical exams and self-exams enhances breast health and helps in early detection of potential issues. A clinical breast exam is a physical exam of your breasts that is performed by a health care provider. Aside from your BSEs, a CBE should be part of your yearly medical check-up. At the Margie Petersen Breast Center at Saint John’s, we work diligently to provide answers to your questions as quickly as possible in our breast clinic. Patients should have a clinical breast exam every three years in their 20s and 30s and annually after age 40. This frequency helps detect changes or abnormalities in the breasts early. Regular exams are crucial for breast health and effective cancer care. Breast Evaluation involves how we assess the extent of conditions. Breast exams help to establish regular assessment and early cancer detection. Advanced technologies, including ultrasound, mammograms, CT scans, and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), provide visual references and measurements for the care team. Biopsies aim to validate if a cancerous condition is present using scientific analysis. Mammograms are considered the standard of care to screen for breast cancer. In addition, mammograms are used to diagnose and evaluate a new suspicious finding or follow someone with a personal history of breast cancer. A mammogram uses compression and x-ray technology to image your breast. Screening is a cornerstone of breast health services, typically involving mammography, clinical breast exams, and in some cases, additional imaging modalities such as ultrasound or a breast MRI. Our imaging center aids in the early detection of breast abnormalities, potentially identifying cancerous or precancerous lesions at a stage when treatment is most effective. The exact nature of the suspected tumor can almost always be confirmed on histological evaluation. When a suspicious breast lesion appears on your mammogram or ultrasound, a biopsy sample will likely be taken from the lesion and sent for histological evaluation by the pathologist. Various amounts of tissue may be required, so we may perform either a fine needle, core, or excisional biopsy, but generally your Providence Saint John’s surgeon will try to remove as little tissue as possible while remaining confident that the sample is representative and taken from the right spot. During breast evaluation, which may include one or more breast imaging methods, such as ultrasound or mammogram, a breast tissue biopsy may be recommended to identify the likelihood of cancer. Biopsy is a necessary step even though most breast conditions are benign (non-cancerous). These conditions can include fibroadenomas, cysts, and other types of benign tumors. While these conditions are not cancerous, they may still require a biopsy for a definitive diagnosis. Ultrasound produces images of the internal structures of the breast by using high frequency sound waves. Breast Ultrasound is noninvasive, painless, and uses no radiation. Ultrasound may safely be used during pregnancy and on those with a contrast dye allergy. Based on the findings, the radiologist can determine whether a suspicious mass is fluid-filled, such as a benign cyst, or solid, such as a noncancerous mass or cancerous tumor. However, a breast ultrasound cannot determine whether a lump is 100% cancerous and, if necessary, a tissue biopsy would be recommended for a positive or negative confirmation. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the breast — or breast MRI — is a test used to detect breast cancer and other abnormalities in the breast. It captures multiple pictures of your breast and then combines the images on a computer to generate a detailed report. Positron Emission Tomography (PET Scans) PET scans are not used to screen for breast cancer due to the limited ability to detect small tumors. Leading this remarkable charge was the late Donald L. Morton, M.D., a larger than life presence who was born in a rural, coal-mining town in West Virginia. His persistent, scientific questioning of the role of the immune system in fighting cancer led to many advances throughout his decorated career.
