Benign prostate hyperplasia means enlarged prostate gland.<\/p>\n","layer_is_content_auto_columns":false,"sidebar_position":"right","widgets":false,"layer_icon":"","layer_icon_position":"left","layer_background_color":"","layer_id":""},{"acf_fc_layout":"layer_content_sidebar","layer_label":"","layer_headline":"","layer_intro":"","layer_content":"<h3 style=\"margin-top:30px\">About BPH<\/h3>\n<p>The prostate gland in adult males remains a constant size until approximately age 40, then begins to enlarge. When the prostate enlarges, this can cause trouble passing urine because the prostate is positioned directly underneath the bladder and encircles the same tube (urethra) that is used to pass urine. The bladder then has to push harder to overcome the prostate&#8217;s resistance to urine flow. <\/p>\n<p>If the blockage continues by the prostate growing the bladder may be unable to empty, leading to a condition called urinary retention. As men age, active testosterone in their blood decreases, which leaves a higher proportion of estrogen. Some scientific studies have shown that benign prostatic hyperplasia may occur because the higher proportion of estrogen inside the prostate, increases cell growth. Another hormone, dihydrotestosterone (DHT) has a well known role in prostate growth As men age, the testosterone levels drop, but they continue to produce and accumulate high levels of DHT in the prostate. There are two classes of medications to treat BPH; Alpha-blockers, which relax the smooth muscle of the prostate gland and thus improve urinary symptoms, and 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors, which block the production of dihydrotestosterone (DHT)\u2014a hormone that affects prostate growth.<\/p>\n<p>Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP) is the prostate treatment most commonly used to treat BPH and is technically a minimally invasive procedure. The surgeon uses a special tool that has an electric current (or laser) and camera to remove a small part of the prostate that is blocking the urethra. This is done through the urethral channel in the penis. By removing the tissue blocking the channel, urine can freely exit the bladder.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"font-size:20px;margin-bottom:-10px\">Risks and complications include:<\/h4>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1590\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1590\" style=\"width: 390px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.saintjohnscancer.org\/urology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/09\/Transurethral-microwave-therapy-TUMT.jpg\" alt=\"Transurethral microwave therapy (TUMT)\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1590\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.saintjohnscancer.org\/urology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/09\/Transurethral-microwave-therapy-TUMT.jpg 720w, https:\/\/www.saintjohnscancer.org\/urology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/09\/Transurethral-microwave-therapy-TUMT-300x212.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.saintjohnscancer.org\/urology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/09\/Transurethral-microwave-therapy-TUMT-100x71.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1590\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Transurethral microwave therapy (TUMT) is one of several, minimally invasive treatments used for BPH.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>Bleeding<\/li>\n<li>Fluid absorption<\/li>\n<li>Hyponatremia (low sodium)<\/li>\n<li>Incontinence<\/li>\n<li>Erectile Dysfunction (very rarely)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>There are a variety of other minimally invasive treatments used for BPH:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>UroLift<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> | FDA Cleared BPH Treatment for Enlarged Prostate<\/li>\n<li>Transurethral needle ablation (TUNA)<\/li>\n<li>Transurethral microwave therapy (TUMT)<\/li>\n<li>Interstitial laser coagulation of the prostate (ILC)<\/li>\n<li>Aquablation Therapy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Simple Prostatectomy is done for patients with urinary retention who have very large prostates over 80 grams.\u00a0All surgeries require hospitalization and a drainage tube called Foley catheter that will remain from 2-7 days. This can be done a variety of ways:<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"margin-top:-10px;font-size:20px;margin-bottom:-10px\">Open Retropubic Simple Prostatectomy<\/h4>\n<p>Through an incision, the surgeon moves the bladder to one site and surgically remove the blocking core of the gland. This provides access to remove the enlarged prostate core that is blocking the urethra. <\/p>\n<h4 style=\"margin-top:-10px;font-size:20px;margin-bottom:-10px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.saintjohnscancer.org\/urology\/treatment\/aquablation-robotic-therapy-for-bph-enlarged-prostate\/\">Aquablation Therapy<\/a><\/h4>\n<p>The surgeon utilizes a minimally invasive next-gen robotic device that maps the treatment area by identifying which portion of the tissue to preserve and to remove. It utilizes a waterjet according to the surgeons plan.
