Making Advances in Breast Cancer Treatment Options

Meet Dr. Janie Grumley

Born in Taiwan and raised in Canada, Dr. Janie Grumley became a champion figure skater before beginning her training to become a surgeon. She chose surgical breast oncology as her field of specialization and takes a novel approach to breast cancer surgery with use of advance oncoplastic surgery – removing breast tumors using plastic surgery incision and techniques while simultaneously reconstructing the breast. She has helped champion intra-operative radiation therapy, in which one dose of radiation can be applied to the tumor bed and nearby tissues, sparing most healthy tissue and preventing the need for many weeks of radiation treatments. She is developing new programs at the Margie Petersen Breast Center at Providence Saint John’s in Santa Monica.
