How does preserving the prostate gland make a difference for men?
Preserving the prostate gland during cancer treatment offers several advantages that can significantly reduce lifelong complications and side effects. The prostate gland plays a crucial role in male reproductive and urinary functions, and its preservation can help maintain these functions. By avoiding radical prostatectomy (surgical removal of the entire prostate gland), men can potentially retain better erectile function and urinary control post-treatment. Preserving the prostate also reduces the risk of developing long-term issues such as urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction, which can significantly impact a man’s quality of life. In addition, treatments like HIFU using Focal One that preserve the prostate gland often result in fewer disruptions to surrounding tissues and structures, such as with prostatectomy. This can lead to a lower risk overall of damage to nerves and blood vessels that are essential for erectile function and urinary control. Preserving the prostate may allow for more targeted and less aggressive treatment approaches, which can reduce the likelihood of developing complications such as bowel problems or bladder control issues.
“Men in our community now have greater options to treat prostate cancer. This out-patient procedure, which is a one-time session, is making a real difference. There’s no cutting or recovery involved.”

What is HIFU Therapy?
HIFU therapy is a newer treatment option that received market clearance in June, 2018. More than 45,000 men around the world with localized prostate cancer have received the HIFU procedure, which has demonstrated its effectiveness to reduce the need for further treatments. In Europe, where the first generation HIFU system originated and was used for whole prostate treatment, researchers published many peer-reviewed studies of the use of HIFU for whole gland ablation with positive results. Prostate Cancer treatment is considered “focal” when a part of the gland is spared from treatment. Sound waves are conducted into a small point which creates heat and destroys the targeted tissue, causing the cancer cells to wither over time. Treatment is delivered without damaging the healthy surrounding structures, which include nerves, blood vessels, and other soft tissues, which are important to maintain bladder control and erectile function.
