Robert Wakeling Discusses Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia and Aquablation Therapy at Saint John’s Health Center

“10 years ago, I would have had to have prostate surgery,” says Robert Wakeling, at 84 years old. Robert underwent a procedure called aquablation therapy, which is intended for men with BPH, benign prostatic hyperplasia. Robert suffered from nightly urination due to an enlarged prostate that was putting pressure on his bladder. He woke up every hour on the hour for years until his urologist suggested aquablation to treat his BPH.

Understanding Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)?

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is a common condition in aging men where the prostate gland enlarges, potentially causing urinary issues. The prostate, located below the bladder, helps produce semen, but as it grows, it can press against the urethra, leading to symptoms like frequent urination, weak urine flow, and difficulty starting or stopping urination.

While BPH is not cancerous, it can still significantly impact quality of life in men as they age. The exact cause isn’t fully understood, but hormonal changes with age may play a role. Treatment options range from lifestyle changes and medications to surgical procedures, depending on the severity of symptoms. Newer treatments like aquablation may offer men more outpatient options. It is best to obtain a diagnosis BPH as soon as symptoms develop, which can improve the quality of treatment.

“My life has changed since I had this procedure. I can’t thank Dr. Movassaghi enough for everything he did.”

What is Aquablation for BPH?

Aquablation therapy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure designed to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)—an enlarged prostate. It uses robotically guided ultrasound imaging to map the prostate and then directs a heat-free, high-pressure water jet to remove excess prostate tissue. This approach allows for precise targeting while minimizing damage to surrounding structures, reducing the risk of complications like sexual dysfunction.

Introduced in 2017, Aquablation therapy has gained popularity as an effective treatment for BPH, offering lasting relief from symptoms such as frequent urination, weak urine flow, and incomplete bladder emptying. Many patients experience quick recovery, often leaving the hospital within 24 hours.

“It’s changed by life. I can’t tell you the differences it’s made.”
