Research and Clinical Trials

The Saint John’s Cancer Institute is a cancer research organization dedicated to the understanding and curing of cancer in order to eliminate patient suffering worldwide.

Many of the physicians and surgeons who are treating and caring for patients in the GI Oncology Program at Providence Saint John’s are also faculty, adjunct faculty and physicians in a fellowship program affiliated with the Saint John’s Cancer Institute.

Our research efforts have helped establish more accurate staging methods leading to better quality measures. Dr. Bilchik’s research and the team at the Saint John’s Cancer Institute, through funding by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), has helped identify those patients who are likely cured by surgery alone, thereby avoiding the unnecessary toxicity of chemotherapy.
