When treating prostate cancer patients with radiation therapy, the goal is to kill the cancer cells while avoiding damage to the surrounding healthy tissue. That’s why we have partnered up with SpaceOAR Hydrogel, a temporary injectable gel that provides space between the rectum and the prostate, making it much less likely that the rectum is exposed to radiation or damaged. SpaceOAR Hydrogel minimizes potential side effects of prostate cancer radiation therapy, so you can continue to thrive after treatment.
What is SpaceOAR?
SpaceOAR Hydrogel is an absorbable hydrogel that temporarily creates space between the prostate and the rectum, reducing the radiation dose delivered to the rectum during prostate radiation therapy.
SpaceOAR Hydrogel is made up on two liquids that when combined, form a soft gel materiel that is mostly made of water. This hydrogel temporarily moves the rectum a half inch away from the prostate. By separating the prostate from the rectum, the hydrogel reduces common side effects including:
- Rectal pain and bleeding
- Chronic diarrhea
- Urinary urgency and leakage
- Erectile dysfunction
Three years after treatment, patients from the study were asked to report on their Quality of Life for bowel, urinary and sexual functions. These patient-reported outcomes showed that SpaceOAR hydrogel patients experienced significantly fewer long-term rectal side effects, were more likely to maintain sexual function, and had significantly higher patient reported scores for urinary and bowel Quality of Life.
